Job Interview Question Tell Me How You Dealt with a Difficult Customer

Job Interview Question Tell Me How You Dealt with a Difficult CustomerJob Interview Question Tell Me How You Dealt with a Difficult CustomerHigh up on the list of difficult interview questions comes the next in our series Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult customer. Before you backpedal into a trite version of The customer is always right, its worth taking a minute to understand what this question is really asking. Does the interviewer who asks this question want to hear that youve always had satisfied customers? Definitely not. Dissatisfied customers are a given in nearly every industry. The interviewer is not looking to hire someone with a perfect track record. The interviewer is looking to hire someone who can confidently and professionally address customer concerns and come to an acceptable resolution with as little interference from management as appropriate.Thats a tall order for a simple question, so its important to put time and thought into preparing your an swer. Heres how to take your experience and build the best response possible.Use the Five Ws to Tell a Compelling StoryYou may remember the Five Ws from when you were learning how to write essays in school. Its a simple strategy for remembering that the writer needs to answer five questions to orient the reader to what was important within the story who, what, where, when, and why. You can use unterstellung five questions to form a powerful answer to what the interviewer asks you.Who was involved in the difficult dispute, and when and where did it take place?Start by providing the context for your decision. Identify the difficult customer and what position you held at the company. Were you a customer service representative who took the call directly? Were you a supervising manager called in by customer service when the problem had already escalated? Or were you were an account specialist speaking with a long-term satisfied client who was suddenly not so satisfied? Understanding thes e details will help the interviewer assess the situation and the appropriateness of your actions. You should identify any pertinent details about when and where this confrontation took place. For example, did the conversation start on the phone and escalate to an onsite visit? Or did you meet with the customer face to face from the start? What steps did you take to identify the customers primary complaint? Did you resolve the issue immediately, or did you work with your supervisor and team to come to a resolution? This part of the answer will help the interviewer understand the situation and assess how well you understood the situation at the time. Its im portant that you take the time to explain the thought process behind your actions. This is the heart of the question because it gives you the opportunity to show the interviewer that you are well-trained and open to input from your employer. The interviewer is looking to hear that you are competent, thoughtful and willing to adjust your approach to different scenarios depending on how your employer coaches you.Dont wing your answer to this question. Identify a time you were proud of dealing with a difficult customer and share the story with the interviewer according to these five points. How have you answered this question in past interviews? Would you change your response now?

How to Recession-Proof Your Career

How to Recession-Proof Your Career How to Recession-Proof Your Career How to Recession-Proof Your Career Don’t get caught off guard by an economic downturn. The best time to start recession-proofing your career is before an economic downturn hits. However, once a recession arrives, you can still take certain steps to protect your job and perhaps even keep your career moving forward. Here's how to recession-proof yourself prior to, or while in the depths of, a major economic downturn. Build up your skill set Regardless of the industry you work in, there's always more to learn new tools, new approaches, and new ways for your career to develop. For example, the invention of blockchain has had an enormous impact on database development, opening huge demand for developers with expertise in that type of software. Your manager will likely be happy to help you hone your existing skills and pick up new ones, and just showing your interest in skill development may well be in your favor should a round of layoffs arrive. But your current employer isn't the only self-development resource you have: Sites like Coursera, Khan Academy, Google Code Academy, and others offer free online courses in a huge range of subjects. Stand out (in a good way) Actively pursuing professional development is just one way to attract notice from your manager. You'll also be a lot more recession proof if your boss thinks of you as the most indispensable employee in your department. To manage this feat, you'll want to periodically bring yourself to your manager's attention by getting your work done early and under budget, volunteering for additional tasks, proactively suggesting ways to cut costs or increase revenues, resolving problems within the department, reporting on your results to your boss, and so on. Your boss is also likely to smile upon you if they find you an easy employee to manage. That means being flexible: graciously accepting changes to your job, such as new shifts or extra responsibilities, working well with others in your department, building relationships with customers and co-workers in other parts of the company, etc. Prepare for the worst Despite your best efforts, you might still get caught up in the wave of layoffs that typically accompanies an economic downturn. For example, if your company goes out of business, it doesn't matter how much your manager loves you you're still out of a job. But if you take steps to prepare for potential layoffs well in advance, you can make it easier to hop into a new job with a minimum amount of disruption. First, dig up your resume and update it. Make sure it includes not only your most recent employment but also all your major accomplishments and any new skills you've developed since the last time you went looking for a job. Second, crank up your networking efforts. It's much easier to find a new job through internal referrals than through the application process. Get back in touch with any contacts you haven't spoken to recently and work on developing new ones particularly in companies where you'd love to work in the future. Finally, clean up your social media profiles for the new job search. Delete any pictures, tweets, or other posts that don't promote your professional brand or could get in the way of your candidacy. If you don't want to necessarily deep dive into your social media account, it's also a good idea to camouflage your nonbusiness accounts so that they won't turn up on a casual Google search of your name especially if said accounts contain anything that you wouldn't want your future boss to know about. One way to make your personal accounts more discrete is to use both your first and middle name as your name for that profile. Also, LinkedIn is a terrific job-search tool. If a recession is looming on the horizon, make sure you're actively updating your profile and making important connections with people in your network. Just be careful; It could come to the attention of your current employer, who might then assume that you're planning to jump ship. Avoid this potential hassle by changing your LinkedIn account settings so that these updates won't be posted to your activity feed. Related: Lost Touch? How to Reconnect With People in Your Network Start job hunting Some jobs are inherently more recession-proof than others. The most recession-proof careers are typically positions within industries or with companies that tend to thrive even during economic downturns. But if your current job is not one of those recession-proof careers, now might be the time to proactively move to a more protected one. Industries that are typically more recession-proof include teaching, accounting, and healthcare. If you don't work in one of those fields and don't want to switch, you might instead focus on employers that are likely to make it through a tough economic downturn relatively intact. These include companies that are leaders in their industries, as well as companies belonging to economic sectors that do well in tough times. For example, companies that make consumer staples like toilet paper and toothpaste generally continue to do well during recessions because people need to keep on buying those things even when they're short on money. Now that you have some ideas for how to be recession-proof, it's important to start trying these strategies out right away. The more time you have to prepare yourself for an economic downturn, the less likely you are to spend significant amounts of time unemployed. Remember, there's no such thing as a completely recession-proof job, but by taking these precautions, you can greatly increase your safety during an economic downturn. Career Advice from 4 Oscar-Winning Films

Career Advice from 4 Oscar-Winning Films Career Advice from 4 Oscar-Winning Films Its Oscar season, and the awards are upon us. With that in mind, we took a look back at some of the Best Picture winners looking for bits of career advice. Heres what we found. On the Waterfront: Always stay true to YOUR dreams. You dont understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody instead of a bum, which is what I am. Among the most famous lines ever spoken by Marlon Brando, it’s also essential career advice. In our lives and careers we face expectations from a wide assortment of people, bosses and otherwise. In the end you have to answer to yourself and live with the decisions youve made. So be true to yourself and your goals. With that youll always be able to face yourself in the mirror and be proud you never compromised your principles.   One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest: Never lose your voice. At its heart this is a story of the struggle between self-expression and oppression. In this case the self-expression is embodied in Randall Patrick McMurphy, portrayed, in one of his greatest roles, by Jack Nicholson. In the film, McMurphy struggles to maintain his individuality in an oppressive mental institution armed with electro-shock treatments. While we dont face such terrifying things in our careers, there is the danger of going along with the crowd, to be a yes-person in your office. This wont help you get ahead in any meaningful way. The greatest asset we have in our careers is our voice. Maintaining our unique points of view and bringing it to the table will ensure were irreplaceable. Annie Hall: Find inspiration in even the darkest places. Although writer/director Woody Allen has long maintained that Annie Hall wasnt an autobiographical film about his relationship with star Diane Keaton, she claimed otherwise. The similarities between the film and Allens own life are hard to ignore. But if we are to assume that his inspiration for the film was his relationship and breakup with Diane Keaton theres a great nugget of advice in the films success. In our lives and career we should look for inspiration in even the saddest places. A breakup, for example, although most often a somber event, can lead to a burst of creative inspiration. So stay tuned into your emotions and be open to inspiration, regardless of the source. If you experience a career setback, look see if there’s a way to look at it as an opportunity. Gladiator: Even the greatest career obstacles can be overcome. If Maximus Decimus Meridius could stand up the emperor of Rome and avenge the murder of his family, what challenges are really insurmountable? Honestly, in our careers, while things may seem difficult, challenging or even impossible, there is always a solution. Always stay determined, even when facing the greatest adversity, and good things will happen. As long as you dont resign to defeat you will find a way to succeed.

Tips for Creating a Video Resume

Tips for Creating a Video Resume Tips for Creating a Video Resume What is a video resume and how can it help your job search? A video resume is a short video created by a candidate for employment and uploaded to the Internet (or emailed to a hiring manager) for prospective employers to review. A video resume describes the individuals skills and experience and is typically used to supplement a paper resume. As with a  print resume, its possible for the video resume to be either general or targeted toward a particular position or company. A video resume can be created by a professional for you, or you can create your own. Some job search and networking sites provide a means for users to incorporate video resumes into their profiles. Its important to keep in mind that a video resume isnt going to get you a job. However, it can assist you in marketing yourself to prospective employers â€" if its done right. Should You Create a Video Resume? Creating a video resume is an optional task for job seekers (very rarely will companies require or request a video resume from candidates). For some job seekers, particularly ones in visual or creative fields, a video resume can highlight important skills. For instance, a video resume is useful for showing any type of performance-based work, whether it involves acting on stage, teaching a class, or presenting quarterly numbers. Also, a video resume can be a good way to show off your personality; for people in client-facing jobs, whose work involves charming prospective buyers, a video resume may be beneficial. However, its easy to miscalculate in a video resume â€" theres a high risk of the script, filming style, or location being inappropriate. If you make it yourself and have little filming experience, your video might come across as unprofessional. Also keep in mind that as with anything on the Internet, once your video file is out there, you cannot control how its shared. Done poorly, it can, at best, hinder your chances of getting an interview. At worst, it can knock you out of contention and embarrass you. Thats what happened to one student who sent a video resume showing himself lifting weights, serving tennis balls, and ballroom dancing. It made the rounds on the Internet and it did not impress any prospective employers, to say the least. Some hiring managers will not even view video resumes, since they fear claims of  discrimination in the hiring process. So, while a video resume can be a great way to get noticed, consider carefully before creating one to make sure a video resume is the right fit for you, and a good use of your time. Tips for Creating a Video Resume If youre considering creating a video resume as part of your job search, keep these tips in mind: Be professional:  Dress as you would for an interview, and maintain a professional demeanor. Avoid slang and, of course, cursing. Pay attention, too, to the background of shots, and make sure it looks tidy. Also make sure there are no distracting noises in the background.Prepare a script:  Dont ad lib your video completely. You want to seem natural and off-the-cuff, but should have a sense of what you want to say, and how you want to phrase it. Do not read directly from a script, or from your resume, since that leads to a dull video. The main points to express in the video are what youll provide the company, and your major goals,  skills, and accomplishments. Think of the video as being a pitch for  why the company should hire you. Know your audience:  As you plan your script and filming location, consider who will watch the video, and calibrate accordingly. A video prepared for a position at a bank might differ from a video prepared for a start-up.Show, dont tell:  Use visuals to illustrate what youre saying in the video script and showcase your talents and skills. For instance, if youre applying for a job where presentations are a major part of the role, you can film yourself assembling a PowerPoint. Or, if any of your presentations were recorded, use that footage in your video resume. Keep it brief:  Videos should be between 30 to 90 seconds. Anything longer than that is unlikely to be watched.Share with friends and family:  Getting feedback from others is an important step. Ask a few people to watch your video, and make edits and changes based on their comments. Always keep in mind that once your video is on the Internet, you no longer have control over who sees it, or how its shared. Take feedback from friends and family seriously. If they think its a misfire, do not share the video. Video Resume Donts  Dont mix your personal life with your professional one.  If you have information on your Facebook or Twitter page that youd prefer employers dont see, dont link your video resume to any of these pages.Dont expect your video resume to replace your traditional resume.  Not all employers are interested in a video resume, and others are worried about discrimination issues, such as hiring candidates because of how they look and sound rather than their qualifications. However, a well-done video can bolster your candidacy for employment.

How to Network With Your Friends for Professional Reasons - The Muse

How to Network With Your Friends for Professional Reasons - The Muse How to Network With Your Friends for Professional Reasons Friends are an important part of anyone’s professional network: They generally have connections in different industries than you, and because they know you so well, they’re often able to come up with valuable ways to help you advance your career. But I’ve found that it can feel weird to network with your social circle, whether you’re asking for an introduction or conducting an informational interview. Blurring personal and professional lines with a close acquaintance puts the relationship in a new context- and that can sometimes feel uncomfortable. To me, it feels like there is more at stake when I involve someone I spend my free time with in my professional life, because I often care about a friend’s opinion of me more than that of a networking contact. I also don’t want them to feel like I’m taking advantage of them by asking for favors or introductions. To successfully network with the people closest to you, start with these four strategies that made it easier for me to reach out to my friends with professional questions. 1. Be Direct About Your Intentions If you want to connect with a friend to talk about his or her professional network, make sure to be straightforward about your intentions. There’s nothing worse than meeting up with someone for a drink because you thought he wanted to simply hang out- and then realizing what he actually wanted was to talk about all the people you might be able to connect him with. I’ve found it’s best to simply send an email making it abundantly clear what I’d like to talk about. If I want to get some insight into a friend’s industry, for example, I might write, “I’d love to chat with you about your work experience.” This approach can seem formal, but in my experience, setting expectations upfront makes the actual conversation go much more smoothly. 2. Pick and Choose You can only ask your friends for so many favors before they may start to think you’re taking advantage of the relationship- so make sure to use your favors wisely! Before you ask someone to help you out with a professional question, think about how long it’s been since you asked him or her for a networking favor. If it was recently (i.e., within the past couple weeks), you may want to hold off or ask someone else in your social group for help. If you can’t get around reaching out to a particular person a few times in a row (if, for instance, he or she is the only person you know in a particular industry), it can help to acknowledge the frequency of your requests: “I know I’ve been emailing you a lot about my job search lately- it’s been a really difficult search for me and I really appreciate all of your help.” 3. Do the Dirty Work When you network with your friends, it’s important to make the process as easy for them as possible by taking on some of the harder or more time-consuming parts of the networking tasks. For example, if I ever ask a friend to introduce me to one of her professional contacts, I like to type up a short paragraph about myself that she can copy and paste into her email introduction. I also try to prepare for a networking conversation with a friend the same way I would for an informational interview with a stranger- by coming up with specific, targeted questions- so no one feels like I’m wasting his or her time. 4. Don’t Cross the Line While you may feel more comfortable with your friends than networking contacts, it’s important to make sure your requests don’t cross the line. For example, never ask a friend to stretch the truth for you. This includes asking him or her to post a recommendation on LinkedIn or write a job reference for you if you’ve never worked together professionally. You should also never ask a friend to do something for you that makes him or her feel uncomfortable. This may seem like a no-brainer (no one wants to make friends feel uncomfortable), but can actually be a little tricky. For example, I wouldn’t have an issue with passing along a referral to a VP at my company, but a friend of mine may work at an organization where that’s considered unacceptable. To address this issue, I usually give friends an easy out when I ask for a professional favor, so they don’t feel trapped by my request: “I know it’s a very busy time of year for you right now, so I completely understand if you don’t have time to get to this.” With the right strategies, you gain valuable professional advice from your friends. However, remember that it’s not a one-way street- as you network with your friends, you should look for ways to help them, too. After all, that’s what being friends is all about. Things to Know About Job Outlook

Things to Know About Job Outlook Things to Know About Job Outlook Job outlook is a forecast of the change in the number of people employed in a particular occupation over a set period, for example, two years, five years or ten years. Economists at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a division of the United States Department of Labor, predict whether- and by how much- the rate of employment will increase or decrease between a  base year and a target year. The BLS publishes this information for hundreds of occupations in the Occupational Outlook Handbook  and updates it every two years. The BLS compares an occupations projected employment change, usually over 10 years, to the average projected change in employment for all occupations over the same period. They describe a careers projected job outlook by saying it will: grow much faster than average (an increase of 14% or more)grow faster than average (an increase of between 9% and 13%)grow about as fast as average (an increase of between 5% to 8%)grow more slowly than average (an increase of between 2% and 4%)have little or no change (a decrease or increase of 1% or less)decline (a decrease of at least 2%) Why You Must Consider Job Outlook When Choosing a Career It is essential to consider an occupations employment outlook, among other labor market information, when you are choosing a career. After determining a career is a good fit based on the results of a self assessment, take the time to learn everything about it before investing money and time preparing for it. That must include determining whether you are likely to find a job when your training and education are complete. While there are no guarantees even for occupations with an exceptional outlook, the odds should be in your favor. Also investigate the job outlook for your current occupation when you are thinking about changing careers. One of the reasons to make a career change is a worsening job outlook. If employment opportunities are few and it looks like they will get even worse, it may be time to prepare to work in a different field. Limitations of Job Outlook Figures While it is important to find out whether an occupation has a positive job outlook, this projection alone does not give you all the required information to know about your chances of finding future  employment. Look at job prospects as well. The same economists who estimate employment growth also compare the number of job seekers with the number of job openings to determine job prospects. Although the BLS may project employment in a particular occupation will grow much faster than average over the next 10 years, the number of available jobs may be few. One reason may be that some fields dont employ many people. Even if economists expect high growth, it may not translate into a significant number of opportunities for those hoping to enter a field or industry. Another important thing to keep in mind is that, despite economists ability to make educated predictions, job outlook and prospects can change unexpectedly. Employment growth can slow down, and it can speed up, due to the influence of a variety of factors. For example, if more job candidates are available than there are job openings, it will be harder to find work. Likewise, when there are fewer qualified applicants, it will be easier to get hired. Additionally, a downturn or upturn in an industry will change the outlook. While looking at national data is an essential first step in researching the job outlook for an occupation, dont skip also investigating the forecasts for that occupation in the state in which you want to work. Use  Projections Central: State Occupational Projections  to find long- and short-term occupational predictions that will also affect your ability to get a job.

A Winning Energy Combination

A Winning Energy Combination A Winning Energy Combination A Winning Energy Combination Pirouz Kavehpour, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at UCLA, is part of a team trying to combine compressed air storage and thermal energy storage into one advantageous system. Compressor energy storage works cheap when you have an alternative source like solar or wind, he says. You store high-pressure air in a container and when you need it, then you just deploy the pressurized air to a turbine to use for electricity. The problem is that to have a system that is useful, it has to be high efficiency and has to work in very high pressure. A major obstacle is when you compress air, you automatically get a lot of heat as the pressurized air temperature will go up by a large amount, he says. The challenge is that you need material that can maintain the integrity in high temperature and high pressure, which can make the process very expensive. It has to make economic sense. When you store energy and want to use it, you always lose part of the energy you stored, he says. Also, compressed air systems in these situations require designing all the components for them. When its not off the shelf, that also can be a large expense. A schematic of an energy system that combines compressed air energy storage and thermal energy storage technologies. Image: UCLA Kavehpour says his teams compressed air/thermal energy system started with building a 1 kilowatt version in a lab, after which they were given a seven-figure grant from the California Energy Commission to build a 74 kilowatt system to run for six hours, he says. For the 1 kilowatt version, it was basically a compressor and a tank, then a thermal storage unit attached to it, he explains. It also involved a turbine thats basically a motor thats connected to a generator. Its a proof-of-concept system where if you balance your energy storage between the thermal storage and the compressed air, youll gain that higher efficiency but also, the design is keeping it much simpler. This can work as a standalone storage system or it can be attached to alternative energy, including solar, he says. Its good to charge the system but then spread around the energy it gives throughout the day, he says. A Patient Approach The ultimate goal is to go toward the commercial base but he insists theyre going to be patient in their process. Theres already the idea of design for a larger scale but going step by step is a good way to understand the system best, he says. For the future, Kavehpour also sees the work as possibly being a key help in the maintenance of the grid. If you think of places like New York, they have high power needs but the grid is old and costs a lot of money to upgrade. Its important to consider that this technology doesnt use CO2 production, its not burning anything, and there arent even any chemicals involved. And I think the system can have a lifetime of 40-50 years, much more than batteries. I definitely like where its heading. Eric Butterman is an independent writer.
